Why the rising sign is different
The Sun and Moon are placed by where the planets are; the ascendant is placed by where you are and when. As the Earth turns, the entire zodiac rises over the eastern horizon once a day, so the rising sign changes about every two hours. Two babies born in the same city two hours apart can share a sun sign and a Moon sign yet have completely different charts — because their ascendants, and therefore their houses, differ.

Why do I need my exact birth time?
The rising sign is the point of the zodiac climbing over the eastern horizon at your birth, and the horizon sweeps a full degree every four minutes — a whole new sign roughly every two hours. Without an accurate birth time there is no honest way to compute it, so this calculator asks for one rather than guessing.
What if I don’t know my birth time?
Check your birth certificate first — in many countries the time is recorded there. If it is truly unavailable, the rest of your chart is still meaningful: use the birth chart calculator for your planets, and the Moon sign calculator, both of which often work from the date alone.
